I’ve said before that as much as I LOVE a clean, organized home, my natural instinct is, unfortunately, to be messy. Over the years, I’ve learned that following a specific process each time I tackle an area to organize is key. When I skip any of the steps, things just don’t stay organized as long.
I broke the process out into 8 easy steps over on Apartments.com today. And don’t worry, 8 sounds like a lot, but it’s not bad. I promise!
The one that gets skipped way too often is #1 – removing EVERYTHING from the cabinet, drawer, or closet you are working on.
I can even give you a brand new example of why this is important…
When I was having a garage sale a few weeks ago, I looked through the old wall cabinet in the dining room for anything I should sell. I found a couple things and moved on.
Since then, we removed everything from the cabinet to get ready for the delivery of our new buffet. As I was unpacking the boxes to fill up the new buffet (woo hoo!) yesterday, I found SO MANY THINGS that should have been sold.
There’s some kind of crazy psychology switch that happens when you’re looking for things to take away vs deciding what is important enough to go back into an empty space.
Head over to Apartments.com now to see the rest of steps to making your next organizing project more effective!
